Welcome to Laurel Street Elementary School

Our mission is to ensure excellence for all. Accordingly, we strive to provide a caring and collaborative environment where all students enjoy learning, meet high standards and view learning as a lifelong opportunity to grow and make a difference in the world. Laurel Street Elementary school is one of twentythree inner-city, public elementary schools in the Compton Unified School District. We are extremely proud of our motivated staff, involved parents, and visionary leadership.

We strive to achieve academic excellence by prioritizing high expectations, good citizenship, regular attendance and respect for diversity. We believe in high academic achievement for all students so we emphasize excellence in instructional delivery to ensure learning and mastery. We are committed to providing a safe and positive learning environment for all students and collaborating with parents and the school community. Students are well behaved and are active participants in their learning at our school.

We provide all students with the highest quality education with emphasis on excellence in teaching. We believe in high academic achievement for all students. To provide rigor, we focus on instructional practices; teaching, learning, assessments, prevention and interventions. Our school is committed to ensuring that the content standards are the ‘taught curriculum’ so we utilize curriculum pacing guides at every grade level to keep us focused on identified instructional targets.

The emphasis on effective instructional strategies has resulted in substantial gains on standardized tests. In 2011, 100% of our students in grades 2 through 5 participated in the 2011 CST and 83% scored at the Advanced/Proficient levels in ELA and 91% scored at the Advanced/ Proficient levels in math. Our API score increased by 39 points from 888 in 2008 to 927 in 2010. Our goal for the 2011-2012 school year is 90% AYP in ELA, 95% in math, and 950 on the API. Our school staff and community are very proud of our accomplishments. We are proud of the outstanding work we are doing with our traditionally underserved student populations.

Our parents are strongly involved in our school. We count on and appreciate the support of our teachers, support staff, parents and the community. We extend a warm welcome to all volunteers who choose to enrich our school with their talents. We encourage new volunteers to get involved in our school to make Laurel Street an even greater place for learning.
